When I am Dead
2014, three-channel video, colour, sound, 39’48’’
The film begins with the story of an old lady “C” who keeps writing to her mother, who died when she was a child. The three-screen structure of the film juxtaposes three different “times and spaces”: space of pure consciousness in which time is compressed; space of reality in which C becomes old in one day, and the old C encounters her mother who is still young, with white skin; the good old days when the young C had her mother.
The film has two parts that are constantly looping. These two parts are connected end to end. Their contents look almost the same, but are different in some subtle details; they just appear very similar.
Born 1976 in Guangzhou; lives and works in Guangzhou
Qin Jin received an MA from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in 2003, and continues to teach in the department of Oil Painting where she received her own training. She works with a wide range of media, ranging from painting, photography, video, to installation and performance. Qin Jin’s artistic practice is closely related to her personal living experiences. Born during the last year of the Cultural Revolution, and having lived through dramatic social change resulting from the reforms and opening up of the country over nearly 40 years, her works bear the marks of this era, tainted with a feeling of confusion and anxiety when one is faced with insecure and uncertain factors. With her creation, she addresses issues of the coexistence of worry and determination, surrender and resistance, focusing on and questioning the fate of the individual who is about to drown. Qin Jin has held solo exhibitions at the OCAT Xi’an and Shenzhen, Guangdong Museum of Art (Guangzhou, China) and SOME/THINGS Gallery (Paris, France). Her works have been featured at group exhibitions and festivals at Capsule Shanghai (Shanghai, China), the 6th Chinese Art Film Festival (London, UK), Beijing Minsheng Art Museum (Beijing, China) and He Xiangning Art Museum (Shenzhen, China). In 2016, she was shortlisted for the 10th AAC Art China Awards “Artist of the Year” (Beijing, China). In 2014, her work When I am Dead (2014) was selected as one of the ten best experimental films by the 10th China Independent Film Festival (Xiamen, China).
